WTAE-TV’s project Bundle-Up is proud to announce the Henninger Award, created for the legacy of Dan Henninger, Broadcast Operations Manager at WTAE. Dan worked to solidify the partnership between WTAE-TV & The Salvation Army, securing the program’s sustainability, and creating one of the most well-known sources for keeping children and senior citizens warm in Western Pennsylvania.
This annual award will be given to the school that raises the most money for project Bundle-Up and embodies the four pillars of “FUN”raising listed below. In addition, the winning school will receive a $2,500 grant to be used at the school’s discretion. The Henninger Award will be announced and given at the annual telethon.
When you “FUN”raise for WTAE-TV’s project Bundle-Up in your school, you are helping local children (including classmates) keep warm throughout the harsh Western Pennsylvania winter season. Complete the Bounce for Bundle-Up fundraiser or “FUN”raise however your school may want!
The Four Pillars of “FUN”raising:
- Kids helping kids stay warm by raising funds for project Bundle-Up
- Represents an “it takes an Army” mentality
- Demonstrates the spirit of service and teaches the value of advocacy through fundraising
- District, School Building, or Classroom-wide participation

“Fun”raising ideas for your school:
Bounce for Bundle-Up – This basketball themed fundraiser is a great way to involve everyone at school. Students are challenged to bounce a basketball as many times as they can within a three-minute time period. Prior to the event, with parent’s help and permission, students may ask friends and relatives for donation pledges for each bounce of a basketball they complete within the three-minute time span. Pledges do not to have to be costly; the average pledge is between one and ten cents per bounce. After the event, children calculate the money they raised and collect totals from sponsors. Project Bundle-Up staff is happy to provide the materials needed to put on this fundraiser at your school! Click here for the Bounce Student Pledge Sheet
Project Penny Wars – Give every classroom a jug that can be filled with change and have a friendly competition with all of your classrooms or different grade levels to see who can raise the most money. Pennies are worth +1 points, while silver coins and paper bills are worth negative points according to their value. This gives the students the opportunity to put the silver coins/paper bills in the other classrooms or grade level’s jars in attempt to neutralize the points they gained from their pennies.
Dress Down for Bundle-Up – One of the easiest (and most fun!) ways you can help us is to coordinate a Dress Down Day at your school. If your students do not wear uniforms, please feel free to modify your Dress Down for Bundle-Up to a “Hats on Day,” “PJ Day” or “Pittsburgh Sports Team Day” or something else that would be fun to wear to school.
Hang a Coat – Adorable coat cut-outs can be sold at a suggested minimum donation of $1 at school spirit days, sporting events or school concerts and performances. If you would like you can list the names of those that buy the “coats” in your school newsletter or website. PBU has created an electronic version that can be easily printed and copied. Pie Face – Students love seeing their favorite teacher or principal getting a pie to their face! This fundraiser requires both participation between the principal/teachers and the students. Students must raise a certain amount of money in order for the principal/teacher to get pied in the face.
Dance To Bundle Them Up – Students partake in a dance-a-thon for a set amount of time. The participating dancers have sponsors that will pledge a certain amount of money for either each half hour or hour that the student spends dancing. For example, if your event is five hours long and a student has a sponsor that pledges $5 for every 30 minutes dancing, that student will receive $50 from the sponsor as long as they stay out on the dance floor. You can sell visitor passes for friends and family to come and visit with their dancer, as well as relaxation packages for the dancers to take a break with or have a set amount of time set aside for taking breaks during the duration of the event.
